Rooms filled with smooth surfaces look elegant and sophisticated, but sometimes they can look a bit one-dimensional and bland. Add a little texture to enliven a room and even create a focal point.

Textures are not all the same, and textures don’t just pertain to fabric. Velvets are sumptuous and soft, while terra cotta tiles can be rough, and wood flooring can be knotty or ridged. Some textures are even furry, fuzzy or bumpy. Layering textures is especially impactful, like a soft rug atop a hard tile floor or a rough throw over a smooth sofa fabric.

To add textures to your home, think bamboo accent furniture, brocade or tweed fabric on a chair, stone flooring, woven wood window shades or textured plaster walls. For a smaller step at adding texture, consider a chenille bedspread, faux fur throw pillows, a cashmere throw or a textured berber rug.
